MLB Draft Recap
Let me preface this blog with saying that as a biased Red Sox fan, this year's draft sucked. Not only did the Rangers take Jack Leiter at number 2 so we couldn't get him, but they also didn't take Kumar at 4. They did take the highest ranked prospect in this year's draft, high school shortstop Marcelo Mayer, so I can't be all that mad, but I would have liked for them to take a household name like Leiter or Kumar in the first round.
Jaden Hill was ranked number 36 in this year's draft and the Red Sox had the number 40 pick for the second round, so I had high hopes that they would finally take a pitcher. Long story short, they didn't; they took Florida outfielder Jud Fabian, again, not a bad pick, but not my favorite. Instead of going to the Red Sox, Hill went to my favorite National League team, the Colorado Rockies at 44 in the second round. At first glance, this is a good pick for me since I like the Rockies, but since he's a pitcher, he now has to deal with the Coors effect.
Another round goes by that the Red Sox don't pick a household name like Landon Marceaux, who goes higher than his ranking of 90 at pick number 80 in the third round to the Los Angeles Angels. Considering that he and Hill were taken so high, they will most likely be signing with their respective teams and not returning to LSU for another year.
No other LSU players were drafted, but a couple of LSU "commits" were drafted in the third round also. Carter Jensen, a catcher, was taken two picks before Marceaux by the Kansas City Royals. It appeared Jensen was very excited to attend LSU and play for us, but as soon as he got drafted, he changed his Instagram bio from LSU baseball commit to "Professional Baseball Player @kcroyals" meaning it is not looking good that he turns down his contract with the Royals to go to college and play for LSU.
Also taken in the third round at pick number 92 by the Yankees was Brock Selvidge, a fairly high ranked pitcher who also committed to LSU. Selvidge did have Yankees in his Instagram bio, but has since deleted it, having nothing as his bio. This gives LSU some hope to adding a highly ranked pitching prospect to their roster. As far as I know, no other LSU commit was drafted this year.
In other news, Ma'khail Hillard and Devin Fontenot have both said they are coming back for a fifth year. On a side note, with over 600 draft picks this year, I figured that they will eventually run out of eligible players and someone would draft me considering I'm Mr. .500. Overall, it was an interesting draft to say the least. Hill will continue wearing purple, while Marceaux will have to change to red; and Jensen will betray my trust by signing with the Royals, while Selvidge might become a villain and sign with the Jankees.
