Takeaways from the Last Day of Intrasquad Scrimmage

Since I did not go to the UNO scrimmages, for all intents and purposes, those will not count. I also couldn't go to the second ULL scrimmage, so only 25% of the Fall scrimmages counts. LSU was able to power their way past ULL with a final score of 8-6 after 8 innings in the noon scrimmage.

My first takeaway is that Tre Morgan is way too good at 1st base to change positions. In high school Tre Morgan also played outfield and some people are saying that he doesn't have the right body type of a 1st basemen. Those people are wrong. So Tre may not be 6'5 225 lbs, but can play the position better than anyone else and I wouldn't sacrifice putting him in the outfield just because he may be smaller than the average 1st baseman.

Next is that our catcher problem is gone. Last year Hayden Travinski got injured and LSU scrambled to split time among Doughty, Wyeth, and eventually landed on Alex Milazzo. Milazzo may be a good defensive catcher, but all three were liabilities at the plate. I still don't know where Travinski is, but what I do know is that Tyler McManus is here and he is here for the long haul. McManus blasted a grand slam to kill the hope of all the Rajun Cajuns in the building.

While our catcher problem is solved, our pitching problem isn't. Devin Fontenot started and was not bad by any means. He pitched multiple innings and only gave up 1 ER while getting out of a couple jams. I'm not sure if Jay Johnson is going to put him in the rotation or if this was just, for lack of a better word, a tryout. If Fontenot does go to the rotation, I suggest giving Garrett Edwards the role of closer. Other than that, just because we have a new head coach, does not mean our pitchers suddenly know how to pitch. Ty Floyd was the Ty Floyd of last year. In the 4th inning Floyd gave up a single, a triple, a sac fly, and another single. After that he FINALLY recorded the final 2 outs, but the damage was done. Grant Taylor came in after that and also gave up a 3 run homerun. Eric Reyzelman had a clean 7th inning at least.

This one isn't so much a takeaway for LSU, but ULL pitchers need better command of their pitches. I think there were more than five HBP in the game, the last one resulting in our captain, Gavin Dugas, going down in pain. Unless it is a broken hip, I doubt this injury will carry over to February when the regular season starts, but he did have to come out of the game.

Lastly, Dylan Crews is still the best batter in college history. He got on 4 times. Wanna know how many plate appearances he had? 4. With a pair of hits and a pair of walks courtesy of those cowards not wanting to pitch to him, this gives him a 2.000 OPS for the game. I know Crews will be drafted in the 1st round as soon as he is eligible and will probably accept the offer, effectively ending his LSU career, but I want him here forever. But since he won't be here forever, we have to enjoy his talent while it lasts.

My closing words will be that we are good. With the #1 recruiting class in the nation according to Baseball America and a new coach, if we made it to Super Regionals last year, we should definitely duplicate those results at the very least. I will see you all in February.
